Fairly well kept campground. More on the primitive side. There is a $7 fee.

Don't go on the weekend, during the week it's quiet and calm. Great for hiking or horse riding. Really one of New Mexicos best kept secret. You can hike all the way to the top of the mountains where there are supposedly caves at the top.

We love going to Red Canyon because the campground is horse friendly. There are stalls/pens for our horses. The campground is usually quiet, not too much traffic up here. I think the biggest reason is that there is no water for fishing and no hookups for RV's in the horse campground. If you like hiking and avoiding the crowds, this is a nice place to visit.

Several trailheads nearby. Depending on fitness level you can hike all day, or backpack.

There are 2 camping areas. The lower one has many parking spaces with concrete picnic tables in the pine trees, and decent toilet facilities for a dry campground. However, the roads are rough; the entrance to virtually all parking spots are crossed by deeply eroded water channels, making it difficult to park trailers/RVs and cars. The upper campground 1 mile up the road is smaller and rougher, but has horse pens and several hiking and horse trails begin here. Red Canyon campgrounds are for people who prefer more primitive camping, although it would be much improved with road maintenance.

Great outdoor
